Bingo is one of the easiest and most fun games to play. It has been around since the 1500s and since then it has gone through various modifications evolving into what it is today. But even if bingo has gone through several changes over the centuries, it is still easy and enjoyable to play, not to mention winning prizes everytime you complete a row of numbers. The Internet has also picked bingo up and online versions of this game are a dime a dozen. You can find thousands of sites where you can play this game as well as in social media sites such as Facebook.
16th Century Bingo
The game originated in Italy in the 16th century. It was not called bingo then. It was called a fairly long name, Il Gioco del Loto dÍtalia. When it reached France decades later, the name was shortened to Le Lotto. The game journeyed through the United Kingdom and France and during those years it underwent significant changes. By the time the 18th century rolled about, it had become the most popular game that people played.
From Europe, bingo reached North America. The 20th century saw bingo being played on American soil. But it was called Beano, from the beans used to mark the numbers already called out on the card of each player. The name bingo was accidentally coined by one of the players whose friend introduced the game of beano to them in the 1920s. When the player completed a row of called out numbers, instead of yelling “Beano!” to signify that he had won, he shouted “Bingo!” And that was where the name bingo came from.
Bingo on the Internet
In the late 20th century when the Internet was introduced, bingo was introduced as an online game, where one of the most significant changes was instead of drawing numbers from a box of tiles with numbers on them, the computer would draw random numbers automatically. Playing bingo online is a lot more convenient because you can play in the comfort of your own home, but it takes away the part where you can socialize and interact physically with other players when you play in bingo halls. Winning prizes has also become hassle-free. You can just have your winnings deposited into your account.
These days people all over the world still love playing bingo, either the conventional game or the online version. Either way, it is an enjoyable and stress-relieving game, not to mention the prizes that you can take home when you win. It has become a favourite pastime of many people, and for some, a money-making machine.
